THE NORTHERN CIRCUIT
The Northern circuit is the most popular safari route in Tanzania. This is a brief overview of those areas and some options for your safari. The circuit takes in Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Parks, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti Plains. Ballooning safaris can be arranged. For those on time constraints flight options from Arusha to the Serengeti are available.
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Bordered by the Rift Valley Escarpment on one side and Lake Manyara on the other this park boasts a diverse range of habitats which afford ample opportunity for game viewing. The lake provides a haven for birdwatchers and hippos wallow in its shallows. The park is also a home to the magnificent tree climbing lions. Lake Manyara covers an area of 330sq km. It is one of the smaller national parks but provides a gentle introduction to what lies ahead.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Tarangire is known for its large herds of elephant and Boab trees. In the dry season the elephant can be seen digging in the river bed for salt and water. In the wet season the hillsides are verdant and lush. It offers a different landscape and adaptations for the animals that live here.
NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
Climbing up the Rift Valley you enter the Ngorongoro Conservation area including the Ngorongoro Crater. This is a world heritage site and is one of the jewels of Tanzania. The park itself is home to Masai cattle herders whose villages can be seen along the route. The Crater is 20km across 600m deep and covers an area of 330sqkm. Most animals spend the day inside the crater ascending at night to the protection of the forest and their tracks can be seen along the way. The crater is a caldera and provides year round water for all animals except giraffe as the sides are too steep for them to descend. Due to the protection provided Black Rhinos can be found in the crater. With an abundance of food and water the crater is teeming with all sorts of animals from the predators to the prey.
THE SERENGETI PLAINS
Passing around the rim of the crater you descend into the Serengeti Plains. Here the landscape changes dramatically. During the annual migration of the wildebeest the plains are covered in herds of Buffalo, Wildebeest and Zebra. During the dry season antelope dominate the landscape. Where there is prey there are also predators; Cheetah, Lion and if you’re lucky Leopard. Known as the home of the big cats and covering a vast area the Serengeti is a marvel to behold. Lions gather to rest in the shade before heading out to hunt; crocodiles bask along the river, hippos cluster in the pools, giraffe saunter past with the utmost grace and poise and elephant can be so close as to hear their breathing. Truly awesome.
